The 123 Decathlon Challenge 2012 was launched on Tuesday 21st February with the first event taking place.

70 players dusted down their racquets and descended on the West Gate Badminton Centre in Winchester to compete in the Badminton competition. The players were grouped in mixed doubles and mens doubles pairings and with all abilities on show the evening provided 4 hours of intense rivalry and various degrees of skill. Individuals entered together with staff from local companies. Two players even played in brightly coloured wigs.

The evening culminated in the Final between Shaun Rogers and Martin Nugus and Graham Smith and Kim Lawford. Both pairs boasted an unbeaten record throughout the tournament but it was the partnership of Graham and Kim who swiped their way to victory to win the coveted CCV Trophy.

In 3rd place saw Russell Mogridge and Simon Rustell shoot to victory.

One player recognised by all was BBC South Today and Radio Solent weather presenter and broadcaster Alexis Green. Unfortunately the sun was not out for Alexis who failed to reach the final stages.

Former Commonwealth & European Gold medallist amd World Bronze Medallist Helen Troke MBE was also present. During the evening players were able to ‘have a hit with Helen’ and compare their skills. Needless to say not many points were scored by her challengers.

It was also a special night for one young lady, Rachel Elkins, who celebrated her 23rd birthday. A birthday cake was presented and the crowd joined in to sing ‘happy birthday’. Rachel’s birthday provided the reason for the date of the first event to swoop into action.

Overall an enjoyable and successful night. We now look forward to the next event in the challenge – the Walk at Manor Country Park on Sunday 25th March.
