123 Decathlon Walk

Weren’t we lucky with the weather! Over 100 walkers took part in the 123 Decathlon sponsored walk on Sunday 25th March. Families could choose between a 5k and 10k distance around the gorgeous Manor Farm country Park in Bursledon, while over 70 hardier types ventured out along a 20k route beginning and ending at Manor Farm and taking in Warsash, Holly Hill and Bursledon.

Noone got lost (well, not too lost and not for too long!), although three people did miss out a section of the 20k and ended up walking it in reverse. Rainbow CEO D’Arcy Myers brought his family – including Domino the Dog – and speaking of dogs, will anyone admit to owning the dog which used Checkpoint Marshal Melinda Bodi’s phone as a doggy loo?

Big thankyou’s must go to Douglas Miller of Coffin Mew who organised the car parking and Bishops Waltham Rotarians, who, coordinated by Colin Carter did such a fantastic and tireless job getting walkers safely over the A27.

A special thank you to Bruce and Christine Elkins from Rainbow Fundraising Manager Clare Acklam for not only completing the 20k walk (well at least Bruce did, Christine didn’t have time!), but also staying to the end of the day and helping to clear the event field.

Everyone enjoyed the bouncy castle, climbing wall (kindly donated by Hampshire county Council), and burger van!

Probably the most fun was had by Fiona and Peter Brent’s two children – Emily and Charlotte – who turned out to be expert climbers and bouncers (so to speak!) Fiona is Rainbow’s book keeper and she thought the day was a great antidote to her day job.

The Walk was the second event in the 123 Decathlon taking place over the whole of 2012, which is hoping to raise £100,000 for three great charities – Rainbow (of course) Wessex Cancer Trust and the Rose Road Association.

The next event is the Track Cycle on 15th April (fully booked), but there are still spaces for the fourth event – the Tennis, on 1st May at the Virgin Active Hampshire Health and Racquets Club, Botley, SO30 3XA. For more information go to http://www.cwfellowes.com/123/
