Arctic Adventure – Explore Finland in the snow!

March 10, 2018 - March 14, 2018

Arctic 4

Arctic 5 Arctic 3 Arctic 4

The perfect antidote to a cold, wet British winter is a cold, dry Arctic adventure! Replace the British winter with a Scandinavian wilderness away from the crowds and enjoy mesmerisingly peaceful scenes of frozen lakes and snow-covered pine and spruce forests.

You’ll be cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and husky-sledding, pushing yourself in this harsh but compelling environment. Back at the log cabin, you can relax in the sauna and watch the night skies for the captivating dance of the Northern Lights.

Day 1

Fly to Finland and arrive in Kuusamo, in north-eastern Finland. A major centre for winter sports, Kuusamo is surrounded by beautiful unspoilt scenery.

You will be driven through these seemingly endless snow-covered landscapes to the comfortable cabin near Hossa. After settling in, you will have an evening meal before heading off to bed. Night cabin.

Day 2: Cross-country skiing

With a full in-country briefing about the adventures ahead, and kitting up thoroughly, you will learn the basics of cross-country skiing. A relatively short tour through the flat pine forest and frozen lakes tests what you’ve learned; it’s common to see reindeer here, so keep your eyes peeled!

After this you can head out on one of the well-prepared ski tracks – some are easy, some harder and hillier; so you can choose a suitable level for you. Time and energy-levels permitting, you can then start making quinzees – a type of igloo – before relaxing back at the cabin to the sauna to soothe any aching muscles! Night cabin.

Day 3: Snowshoeing

After another short introduction, you set off from the cabin in your snowshoes, following a route through beautiful snow-covered forests of pine and spruce. Break for a picnic lunch around an open fire, then you continue on. Back at the cabin, if you haven’t done so, you can finish your quinzees – if you want to sleep in it overnight can do so – and there’s even the opportunity for you to try ice swimming!

There is usually opportunity to witness the magical Northern Lights.

Night cabin / quinzee.

Day 4: Husky-Sledding

We drive you to our husky farm near Kuusamo, where you meet our intelligent, enthusiastic and very photogenic teams of huskies! After learning a little about the dogs, you have an introduction to sled-driving and set off!  The trail takes you through snow-white forests and frozen lakes; the day is a truly memorable highlight of your adventure!  Late afternoon its off to the hotel, where you can celebrate your Arctic achievements.

There may also be time for an optional visit to a reindeer farm.
