Our Garden Areas - Two Projects

The million pounds we raised for our new building was not enough to develop the specialist play areas we wanted for our back garden or to "finish off" the area at the front of the building. Together with Hand Made Places of Bordon, we have been developing plans for specialist play areas in the back garden which will encourage our children to practise what they have learned in the classroom (Project "Play Away"). In addition we plan a less structured area at the front of the building which will have wild flowers to encourage wildlife ("Project Play Away WILD").

Play Away
The People's Millions (Big Lottery award programme) will now fund a large proportion of the Play Away project for us after our success in the public vote on November 14th. The balance has already been raised by generous donations from Lions International, St James' Place Foundation, The Toy Trust, Hampshire County Council, The Foyle Foundation and Help A Local Child.
Power FM
In March 2007, we were awarded £1,500 from Power FM's - Help A Local Child towards our gardens.

Play Away WILD
Play Away WILD is being funded through a grant of £9,905 already awarded by the Big Lottery Breathing Places programme. The Play Away WILD project will develop a wild garden at the front of the building.

" This will encourage wildlife to The Rainbow Centre, provide an opportunity for the children and adults with disabilities, (who attend the centre) to see wildlife in a natural habitat and raise awareness of a 'garden philosophy' to wildlife conservation. Play Away WILD will also encourage greater community involvement, volunteering and help to enhance the delivery of our Conductive Education services."

If you are interested in getting involved with this 'Breathing Places' project, the Project Summary document .... (click to open) explains further. More information can also been found on the BBC Breathing Places web site ... , or simply turn up to our Garden Open day (provisionally scheduled for the 4th Dec and the day of our AGM) when plans for the wild garden will be on display.

We hope to encourage other voluntary and conservation organisations and members of the local community to get more involved with this project.
