Stroke Group

The stroke group sessions help to develop the skills and motivation needed to overcome problems of movement and bodily control encounter by clients in everyday living. A participant in CE sessions can gain increased confidence and self-assurance in finding solutions to the problems faced in day to day living, with the leadership and advice of a single conductor leading the group. This renewed confidence in abilities enables a more active and independent life to be lead.

All aspects of living with a stroke are addressed. Planning and recording of progress are guided by the Principles of Conductive Education. Each person has the potential to improve following a stroke. The conductor is constantly looking for such opportunities and such potential. Our approach to the recovery from a stroke is to see it as a learning process, a re-learning of necessary skill. Conductors work with clients to find new and different ways of overcoming the problems faced, such as mobility, transfer, self help skills, speech and language difficulties. A personal set of goals will be worked towards within a balanced programme which covers all areas mentioned earlier.

The session aims to:

•  Create an inspiring, motivating and positive atmosphere in order that clients enjoy learning together with similar people.

•  Increase the level of independence, social and daily living skills.

•  Increase confidence in the use of the affected side and in the client's own abilities.

•  Improve bodily control and mobility - (such as how to find and maintain a symmetrical position).

•  Increase overall awareness of the affected side.

•  Increase range of movement on the affected side.

•  Improve walking technique, including weight bearing on the affected side and the use of ankles when standing and walking.

•  Create new habits of movement.

•  Reduce reliance on non-affected side.

•  Increase stamina.

•  Help the client learn to connect speech with movement (aphasia)

•  Provide opportunities to meet other people recovering from stroke.

Attendance: Prior to taking part in group sessions the client is invited to attend an initial consultation. During the one-hour session, two conductors will ask the client to carry out some practical movements. These are aimed at providing base line information enabling the conductor to set specific individual aims.

The adult service offers placement for everybody with a stroke. All sessions take place in small groups of a maximum of four people. Group work is seen as an essential component in Conductive Education as it enables people to work alongside others who share similar experiences. The duration of the session is 90 minutes . Family members and/or friends are welcome to attend if the individual wishes. Sessions run weekly on Mondays from 13.00-14.30 .
