EHC Assessments – A guide for parents

The majority of children and young people with SEN or disabilities will have their needs met within local mainstream early years settings, schools

or colleges. Some may require an Education Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment in order for the local authority to decide whether it is necessary

for it to make provision in accordance with an EHC plan.

The purpose of an EHC plan is to identify a child or young person’s special educational needs and make provisions to meet those needs. It is also to secure the best possible outcomes for them across education, health and social care and to prepare them for adulthood.

Every child and young person has the right to expect a good education, and the support they need to become independent adults and succeed in life.

Legislative changes have introduced a new system intended to put families at the heart of the decision making process.

This guide provides an overview of the legal framework and advice on how to successfully navigate the EHC assessment and planning process to ensure that any plan made is personalised and accurately reflects your child’s special educational needs, aspirations and desired outcomes. It is not intended to be a substitute for or take the place of independent and tailored professional advice.
